Two drown during fight at reservoir

KENO — Two men drowned and another suffered stab wounds during an altercation at a reservoir east of Ashland, the authorities said.

Sheriff Tim Evinger of Klamath County said as many as six young men were involved in the fight at the Topsy Reservoir late Tuesday. He said one man stabbed another in the chest, prompting a third man to push the stabber off the ledge and into the water.

Evinger said it’s believed the man couldn’t swim well, so the man who pushed him dived 20 feet into the water to help. The two may have gotten tangled in weeds before drowning, Evinger said.

A fisherman plucked one of the men from the water and tried to perform CPR. A dive team found the other man’s body after a two-hour search, Evinger said.

The names of the victims were not released, pending notification of relatives.

The stabbing victim was taken to Sky Lakes Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life threatening.

Evinger said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the fight. No arrests have been made, but the sheriff said the investigation is still active. He said deputies planned to interview about 15 witnesses.
