Tree Top buys Medford-based Sabroso

Tree Top Inc., of Selah, Wash., has purchased Medford fruit puree processor Sabroso Co.

Sabroso, the nation's leading manufacturer and seller of fruit purees, becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Tree Top, a grower-owned cooperative with 1,300 members in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

The deal, for an undisclosed sum, closed on Friday.

"This transaction allows Sabroso to substantially leverage our fruit expertise with that of Tree Top to better deliver innovative processed fruit solutions to our customers," said Sabroso President Matt Reid in a statement.

Sabroso, which began operations in 1963, traces its heritage back to Myron Root and Co., founded in 1932. It has manufacturing facilities in Medford and Woodburn, as well as Oxnard, Calif. In addition to the fruit puree, it makes dried fruit flakes and fruit preparations for manufacturers and food service providers.

Tree Top manufactures, distributes and markets juices and fruit-based products under the Tree Top brand name as well as ingredients to the world's largest food companies and food service operators. Tree Top operates four production plants in Washington, along with one in Rialto, Calif.

Sabroso Chief Executive Officer Jim Root will stay on an advisory capacity.
