Traffic resumes after spilled nails cleaned up

A trailer filled with nails, end caps and other tools turned over while heading south on Interstate 5 near Rogue River just after 9 a.m. today, spilling its cargo across the freeway and backing up traffic for miles.

Nails were strewn across the highway, but officers from the Oregon State Police and the vehicle's occupants quickly swept them to the side.

Nick Goddard of Grants Pass was driving the vehicle that pulled the trailer. He said he was passing another vehicle at 50 to 53 mph when the trailer started whipping from side to side in between mileposts 48 and 49.

"It bounced from one end of the median to the other," Goddard said. "No one was hurt. Me and my buddies' hearts are pounding."

Traffic on the southbound side of I-5 was backed up to milepost 52.

The Oregon Department of Transportation road information Web site reports that the lanes have reopened. No one was injured and there were no reports of punctured tires.
