Tour teaches folks about green building, power

The Rogue Valley Green and Solar Tour, set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, will give participants a chance to learn about green building and solar energy generation while touring new homes.

Builders, architects, green building consultants and homeowners will be at each home giving presentations and answering questions.

Homes on the tour have been certified Energy Star, Earth Advantage or LEED. Experts will be on hand to explain the differences in certifications and how they compare to Oregon building code. Each of the homes will feature measures to reduce energy and water consumption, use building materials more efficiently, and improve indoor air quality.

Those interested in participating can register online at www.earthadvantage.org. Registration also will be available at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Bus transportation to each home will be provided. There will be an hourlong lunch stop at Phoenix Organics, but participants are welcome to bring a bag lunch or buy food from the Burrito Wagon. Participants also are encouraged to wear shoes that are easy to slip off when entering homes.

The Rogue Valley Green and Solar Tour is sponsored by Solar Oregon, Energy Trust of Oregon, Earth Advantage Institute, and the Jackson County Home Builders Association. Solar Oregon is a nonprofit membership organization providing public education and community outreach to encourage Oregonians to choose solar energy.
