Top two seeds play for UBS Financial Open title

Amir Hadad charged into the men's open finals of the $17,500 UBS Financial Open and Senior Clay Championships Saturday at the Rogue Valley Swim and Tennis Club by defeating local product Nate Schnugg.

But the Israeli citizen who lives in Budapest, Hungary, has some work to do in the tournament before joining the Boston Lobsters in the professional world team tennis league later this summer.

Hadad has to get by defending champion and No. 1-seed Roman Borvanov of Beaverton to pocket the $3,000 winner's share of the purse in today's title match of the richest tournament of the six-stop Pacific Northwest circuit.

Second-seeded Hadad eliminated Schnugg, 6-4, 6-4, in one semifinal, while Borvanov had a little easier time in a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Christian Vitulli, Schnugg's college teammate at the University of Georgia.

Hadad used one break in each set to down the fourth-seeded Schnugg, who never won a game on Hadad's serve.

"It was close," said Frank Inn, RVSTC director of tennis. "Hadad broke early in the second set and Nate was trying to play catch-up after that. Hadad said after the match that Nate has a big game."

Hadad had moved inside the top 200 in the ATP professional rankings earlier this year before an injury dropped him in the rankings.

Inn said his personal relationship with Hadad's coach, the prize money and favorable scheduling brought Hadad to Medford.

Schnugg and Vitulli of Kenya will have another shot at Hadad and Borvanov in today's open doubles finals.

"It should be a real interesting doubles match," said Inn. "Nate and Vitulli are young, talented college players, while Hadad and Borvanov are veteran tour players who know the ropes. Nate has had a lot of success in doubles. Maybe that will bring him more confidence."

Recent North Bend High School graduate Kelcy McKenna prevailed in the women's open singles finals against Suzanne Matzenauer of Tacoma, Wash., 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

McKenna, who won four straight state prep tennis titles, will enter Arizona State in the fall on a tennis scholarship, while Matzenauer plays collegiately at Northwestern.

In the decisive third set, McKenna broke at 4-all, then served out the match.

"In the end, Suzanne just faltered her serve a little bit," said Inn.

The men's singles final is set for 11:30 a.m. today and the doubles championship will follow at about 1:30 or 2 p.m.
