Thunderstorms hit Applegate, elsewhere in county

This afternoon's build-up of thunderstorms has brought increased lightning to Jackson County.

The thunderheads stacked up Thursday and Friday, but storm activity was limited mostly to Northern California and east of the Cascades.

As of 5:15 p.m. today, the National Weather Service office in Medford reported 20 strikes in the county in the previous 50 minutes. Activity was focused in the Applegate and the southern edge of the county to within about five miles south of Medford and in the mountains on the east side of the Rogue Valley.

Fire crews were sent to check several strikes in the Applegate area. Columns of smoke were spotted in Sterling Creek. Details weren't immediately available.
