Three measures get debate tonight

Several Southern Oregon University faculty plan a panel discussion of ballot measures dealing with tax policy and criminal sentencing at 7 p.m. in the Meese Room at the Hannon Library at SOU, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd. It's free and open to the public.

Economics professors Hassan Pirasteh and Dan Rubenson will discuss Measure 59, which would create an unlimited deduction for federal income taxes on Oregon returns, and its effects on state income taxes in the context of Oregon's tax system.

David Carter, an assistant professor of criminology, will describe the effects of Measures 57 and 61 on prisons, the state budget and the outlook for crime and justice. The measures are two approaches to strengthening penalties for people convicted of property crimes.

Time will be provided for audience questions and discussion.
