Three arrested for suspected roles in robbing medical pot grower

Jackson County sheriff's deputies arrested three people suspected in holding a medical marijuana grower at gunpoint and making off with $700 early Saturday morning, a sheriff's media release said.

William Sandlin, 22, Joseph Callas, 28, and Brooke Villa-Staton, 19, are held on charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, third-degree assault, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary. All remain lodged at the Jackson County Jail and have bail amounts set at more than $1 million.

Jackson County sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a home invasion at 3:26 a.m. Saturday in the 3500 block of Evans Creek Road in Rogue River. A 52-year-old medical marijuana grower who lives there said two men wearing dark blue bandanas over their faces broke in while he slept in the living room, the release said. One had a .38-caliber revolver.

Both robbers allegedly began to yell at the grower to give them money, and he gave them $700. Then the men told him to lie on the ground, face down. Fearing that the two intended to kill him, the grower fought back. During a brief fight, the gun fired, but no one was hurt. Police said the robbers eventually gave up and fled.

About half an hour after receiving a 911 call about the home invasion, deputies in the 15000 block of Meadow Lane in Sams Valley pulled over a vehicle with two men inside who matched the robbers' description and a woman driver.

The man who had been robbed was brought to the traffic stop area and identified Sandlin and Callas as his assailants, the media release said. Police said Villa-Staton was their getaway driver.

Investigators said all three suspects admitted to the home invasion. Sandlin told police that he worked in the grower's medical marijuana garden and was owed money, so he, Callas and Villa-Staton went to the house to take money and marijuana he felt he was owed, the news release said.
