Thompson makes more history at LPGA Classic

PRATTVILLE, Ala. — Lexi Thompson made a little more history in the Navistar LPGA Classic, opening her title defense with a career-best 9-under 63 to match the tournament record on Thursday.

Last year, Thompson became the youngest champion in LPGA Tour history at age 16, winning by five strokes. Fifteen-year-old amateur Lydia Ko broke the record last month in the Canadian Women's Open.

Thompson had nine birdies in her bogey-free round on the links-style Senator course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Capitol Hill complex. Tour

At Midland, Texas, Jason Allred shot a 1-under-par 71, giving him a share of 37th place in the first round of the WNB Golf Classic at the Midland Country Club.

The Ashland native is five shots off the lead, which is held by Aaron Goldberg and Jamie Lovemark, who fired 66s.

Allred made five birdies and four bogeys. He began an up-and-down back nine with back-to-back bogeys but recovered by birdieing three of the next four holes.
