Tax debtors could face collection fees

If you're in arrears on your Oregon state taxes, you could wind up paying more than just interest and penalties. The Oregon Department of Revenue says you might also be paying fees to a private collection company.

The agency says the Legislature looked for savings this year and found $415,000 in the department's budget — fees the state paid last year when it sent tax debts out for collection.

But that changes as of Oct. 1.

The department says taxpayers who want to make sure of avoiding the collection fees should pay up before October. It has sent letters to 200,000 taxpayers giving them the notice.

The agency says the fees, if wages are subject to garnishment, could amount to up to 67 percent of the debt.
