Talty's hat trick helps Spartans split with Totems

Tim Talty struck early then delivered the game-winning goal in overtime for the Southern Oregon Spartans hockey team, which topped Seattle 8-7 in NORPAC play at The RRRink on Sunday.

Talty's hat trick helped the Spartans (16-7) rebound from a 6-0 defeat to the Totems (13-2) on Saturday, splitting the two-match home series in a battle of the league's top two squads.

Talty, the team's leading scorer, received a pass from Mike Leskun and Luke Nickels and connected four minutes and 55 seconds into overtime.

Talty also scored back-to-back goals in the second period to help the Spartans take a 3-2 lead.

Nickels also came up with a clutch goal, scoring with less than a minute to knot the score at 7 and send the contest into overtime. He also scored the opening goal for the Spartans on a powerplay.

The Totems' Cameron Hoffman turned in a hat trick.
