A free public presentation called "Bath Salts and Spice Are Not so Nice" is planned from 1 to 3 p.m. today in the Smullin Education Center auditorium at Rogue Valley Medical Center. This presentation will be relevant for medical workers, emergency responders and the public.
Dr. James Hammel, a local expert about the dangers of the designer drugs known as bath salts and spice, will show how people can:
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of bath salt intoxication and spice intoxication, and the differences between them.
- Understand the challenges in diagnosing spice intoxication and especially bath salt intoxication.
- Identify the medical consequences, and medical work-up, of spice and bath salt intoxication.
- Be aware of treatment options and limitations, for bath salt and spice intoxication.
Hammel also will discuss what designer drugs are and how they have wound up in our communities.
Bath Salts and Spice have been in the news locally and nationally. Users of these very dangerous drugs are frequently violent and present a challenge to police and health care workers as well as a danger to the public.
