Talk explores Chinese in Jacksonville

Retired teacher and history buff Larry Smith will talk about Jacksonville's Chinese past in a noontime talk next week in Medford.

Smith will tell the story of the Chinese immigrants using photos from the Southern Oregon Historical Society collection. The talk is at noon Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Medford Branch Library, 205 S. Central Ave. It repeats the following week in Ashland.

Smith will explore how the Chinese arrived in the Gold Rush town, how they endured extreme discrimination, how they contributed to the town's economic stability and how they left Jacksonville in the 1920s.

People who attend can bring lunch to eat during the presentation, which is part of a series celebrating Oregon's 150th birthday.

The lectures are co-sponsored each month by the SOHS and the Jackson County Library System.
