Talk about burn ban tonight

People who want to get in their two cents' worth on a plan to limit open burning in Phoenix have an opportunity during a workshop tonight.

It begins at 7 p.m. at the city's public works annex, 1000 S. B St. It's open to the public.

The City Council will take public testimony for the first 30 minutes of the session, limiting each speaker to 5 minutes. Then it will consider how to proceed on the issue.

For months now, the City Council has been discussing whether to ban burning in city limits. Proponents say a ban would help air quality across the region; opponents say a ban represents unnecessary government intrusion.

The council has considered several alternatives, including a compromise that would allow burning for a limited number of days each fall and spring.
