Talent OKs contract with its new city manager

TALENT — The City Council approved a contract Wednesday with Tom Corrigan to become the new city manager. Corrigan is the city manager in Galena, Alaska.

Corrigan was interviewed by the council on Dec. 1. After the interview, the group voted to offer him the position pending passage of a background check and agreement on an employment contract.

"We had completed our reference checks and successfully completed an agreement and brought it to the council last night," Interim City Manager Dale Shaddox said Thursday. Corrigan will have an annual salary of $85,032.

Corrigan has worked for Galena since 2009. He was city manager in Fredonia, Ariz., from 1998 until 2009. He has also worked in emergency medical services and as a fire marshal, inspector and captain. He and his wife have had a home in Sams Valley since 2009.

Corrigan's hiring ends a nearly seven-month search for a new manager after the council on June 1 voted to not rehire Jay Henry and to place him on immediate leave.

On Dec. 1 the council approved a $100,000 settlement with Henry, who had filed a tort claim against the city alleging civil rights violations and contractual interference. The settlement is not considered an admission of wrongdoing and it bars further claims against the city.

Corrigan is expected to begin work within the first two weeks of January. Shaddox's contact with the city ends Dec. 31. Finance Director Denise Woodman will serve as interim director from Jan. 1 until Corrigan arrives.
