Studded tires can stay on till April 5

The Oregon Department of Transportation has extended the studded tire season through Saturday, April 5.

Cool temperatures forecast through the weekend mean drivers may not have enough time to remove studded tires by April 1. The Washington State Department of Transportation has also extended the season through April 5.

Drivers with studded tires on their vehicles in Oregon after April 5 can be charged with a Class C traffic violation, which carries a maximum $145 fine.

ODOT recommends drivers not traveling through the mountains this next week remove their studded tires early to avoid the rush.
Studded tires cause at least $11 million damage each year on city streets, county roads and state highways, and other types of traction tires or chains are recommended.
