State closes part of highway leading to Oregon Caves

Updated, 4:02 p.m. A wildfire has closed Highway 46 leading to the Oregon Caves National Monument, officials said.

The fire is burning in trees and brush near the highway, causing a traffic hazard because of thick smoke in the area, said Oregon State Police Sgt. Steve Mitchell.

“It is a safe assumption that this highway should be avoided this afternoon,” Mitchell said. “A lot of the road will be needed for emergency vehicles heading to the fire.”

All lanes of Highway 46 are closed from milepost 0 at Cave Junction to milepost 19. There was no indication of when the highway will be reopened, Mitchell said.
