Standoff with suicidal man ends safely

Police blocked Merry Lane in White City for an hour and a half Thursday night before negotiators persuaded a suicidal man to surrender, Undersheriff Rod Countryman said.

The sheriff’s office received a call at about 10:30 p.m. from family members indicating that Lorne Michael Thayer, 21, was despondent over the recent death of a relative and was threatening to shoot himself. He had already fired several shots from one of his two guns.

Two sheriff’s negotiators and a 15-member SWAT team surrounded the home in the 2300 block of Merry Lane and blocked off the street.
Negotiators spoke to Thayer using a portable sound system and eventually convinced him to surrender.

He was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center’s psychiatric ward for evaluation.
