Mayor: Kings are in 'final weeks' in Sacramento

Sacramento Mayor and former NBA player Kevin Johnson says the Kings' possible relocation to Anaheim "feels like a slow death" and this "will likely be the Kings' final weeks in Sacramento after 26 years."

Johnson's comments were posted on his website Tuesday night and were his strongest yet about the franchise's potential move. He met with Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof last month and has believed since that the Kings will leave after this season.

The Maloofs have been in discussions with Anaheim officials about relocating the franchise to Orange County. The Kings have not commented publicly on any relocation talk.

America's oldest motorsports publication will fold today

HARRISBURG, N.C. — The oldest motorsports publication in America is going out of business after 76 years.

The publisher of National Speed Sport News says the final issue is today.

The first edition of the weekly paper was dated Aug. 16, 1934. Chris Economaki sold that first issue at Ho-Ho-Kus Speedway in New Jersey, began writing for the paper soon after and became editor in 1950.

His daughter, Corrine, said Tuesday the sluggish economy has made it too difficult for her to continue the publication. She called NSSN an integral part of the Economaki family for its entire 76-year run.

The online version of the newspaper will continue and provide daily news.

Pens' Cooke says he needs to change way he plays

PITTSBURGH — Penguins forward Matt Cooke apologized for an illegal hit that earned him the stiffest suspension of his NHL career, saying he needs to "change" the way he plays.

Cooke told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and the Post-Gazette late Monday in Detroit that he "made a mistake" when he landed an elbow to the head of New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh.

"I realize and understand, more so now than ever, that I need to change," Cooke told the newspapers. "That's what I wanted my message to be."

The oft-penalized left wing was suspended by the NHL for the remainder of the regular season and the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, which means he'll sit a minimum of 14 games.
