Spartans lose, settle for fourth seed in Thorne Cup

MCCALL, Idaho — The Southern Oregon Spartans hockey team were upended by the Idaho Junior Steelheads 10-1 on Friday, but move on to play in the Final Four of the Thorne Cup.

The Cup, which is the last phase of the Western States Hockey League playoffs, features the four division champions and two at-large teams. As one of the at-large squads, the Spartans claimed the final seed as the field was narrowed to four after Friday's results. The Spartans beat the Dallas Ice Jets on Thursday to split their two play-in games, giving them enough to squeeze into the next stage of the event.

Today, Round robin play begins with the Spartans squaring off against the Junior Steelheads again at 8 p.m. The top two teams out of the four remaining squads advance to play in Las Vegas for the United Hockey Union National Championships at the Las Vegas Ice Center.

On Friday, Joe Bordak scored the lone goal for the Spartans.

Josh Haverstrom and Ivo Crhak both tallied a pair goals for the Junior Steelheads.
