Snowshoe walks start at Crater Lake

Crater Lake National Park's free ranger-guided snowshoe walks will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, and will be offered every Saturday and Sunday afternoon through April 29.

Additional walks will be offered Monday, Dec. 26, through Friday, Dec. 30.

The walks will last two hours and cover one mile of "moderately strenuous terrain," a news release said. The route will take walkers along forests and meadows along the Crater Lake rim.

Participants should be at least 8 years old, be in "reasonably good physical condition," and come dressed in warm clothing and water-resistant footwear. No previous snowshoeing experience is necessary.

Snowshoes are provided free of charge, and park admission is free during the winter months.

Today's weather report says there are 31 inches of snow on the ground at park headquarters. Steel Visitor Center is open, but shops and cafes are currently closed.

Tour space is limited and advance reservations are recommended. Call the park visitor's center at 541-594-3100 for more information.
