Snow still expected, but not as much

Light snow has been falling this morning on Interstate 5 at Siskiyou Summit, but the road remained open while forecasters were still expecting snow in the mountains and rain on the valley floor through the day.

Forecasters have toned down earlier forecasts, and are now expecting 10 to 16 inches of snow in the high Cascades and 5 to 10 inches in the Siskiyous.

The Oregon Department of Transportation reported snow flurries and spots of ice on Interstate 5 and about 1 inch of new snow.

Winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph prompted the Mount Ashland ski area to close the Ariel chairlift for the day. The ski area reported 3 inches of new snow since Thursday with snow continuing to fall.

The Mount Shasta Ski Park reported 1 inch of new snow.

Rain and snow were expected to continue on New Year's Day, with the snow level rising to near 6,000 feet.
