Ski hill raises money for cancer society

Mount Ashland Ski Area will honor local skiing legend Gene Landsmann, who died of cancer in February 2008.

On the third annual Gene Landsmann Day, April 2, the mountain will donate $2 from every lift ticket sold to the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life in Ashland.

Landsmann was an Austrian native who came to Ashland in 1974, taught at Mount Ashland's ski school and developed the ski patrol system. He was a fixture on the mountain for decades.

Ashland's Relay For Life is at Ashland Middle School on May 21-22. The 24-hour event raises money and awareness for cancer research and treatment in a symbolic relay.
