Sierra Club offers grants to students

A $500 sustainability grant is being offered to local college students by the Rogue Group Sierra Club in honor of the late Tom Rose, a longtime member and activist.

The Tom Rose Sustainability Grant is available to any Southern Oregon University, Rogue Community College or Oregon Institute of Technology student. The student's sustainability project must be under the supervision of a faculty member.

Deadline for applying is Feb. 28.

The purpose of the grant is to support sustainable ideas and projects in Southern Oregon, according to chapter chairman Tom Dimitre.

Rose, a Sierra Club member for more than 50 years, was known for his efforts to protect the unique and fragile ecosystem of the middle branch of the east fork of Ashland Creek.

The chapter commissioned the grant as an "ongoing tribute to a great environmentalist, a great friend and a great human being," Dimitre said.

Grant applications will be available at the schools. For more information, contact the schools or Dimitre at 541-890-5022.
