Saints deny RV Adventist state tourney berth

ASHLAND — The Rogue Valley Adventist dream season came to an end at the hands of North Clackamas Christian in the second round of the Class 1A boys basketball state playoffs on Saturday.

Led by Tyler Spurgeon's 28 points, seventh-ranked North Clackamas Christian overwhelmed the Red Tail Hawks, 61-38, at Ashland High School to secure a berth in the state tournament starting Thursday at Baker City.

"We just got outmatched tonight," said Rogue Valley Adventist coach Mike Glasgow, who guided the Red Tail Hawks to the Mountain Valley League No. 1 seed the first year in the conference. "We played a pretty decent game."

Rogue Valley jumped out to a 10-2 first-quarter lead, then the Valley 10 League champion went on a 12-0 run to end the period.

The Saints (22-6) continued their hot-shooting by outscoring Rogue Valley 20-6 in the second quarter. Spurgeon, a 5-foot-5 senior guard, sparked North Clackamas by hitting three of his six 3-pointers and scoring 11 points in the stanza.

Spurgeon was 11 of 20 from the field in the game, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range.

"He was impressive," said Glasgow. "Guys were right in his face and he just stepped back and shot it. He's a good basketball player."

Junior Ryan Coggins paced the Hawks with 12 points and Robert Denton ripped down a team-high nine rebounds.

"We just came up against a team that was better than us," said Glasgow. "There's no doubt about it."
