Roll out the red carpet

Tonight is the 83rd annual Academy Awards.

Most of us will be watching it on the small screen, where it starts at 5:30 p.m. on KDRV Channel 12. Commentary on the fashions starts well before that.

If you're looking for a glitz locally, the Ashland Independent Film Festival presents an Oscar Night Gala from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St. The party will include a broadcast of the awards ceremony on two, 30-foot screens; dinner and dessert from Helena Darling Fine Catering and wines from South Stage Cellars and Wooldridge Creek Winery. Jefferson Public Radio's Geoffrey Riley will be the local host. The event, in addition to a celebration of Hollywood's biggest night, is a fundraiser for the nonprofit AIFF and will include a silent auction. Individual tickets cost $60 and are available online at www.ashlandfilm.org.

And if you would like to win something yourself, enter an online movie awards contest at www.mailtribune.com/oscars. Pick the Oscar winners and you can win prize packages from Cinemark's Tinseltown theater and have a chance to win a national prize — a DVD of every best picture winner.
