Rogue River Trail reopens after fire-related closure

The historic Rogue River Trail, closed because of the Big Windy Complex fire threatening the area, was reopened today.

The section of the popular hiking trail from Grave Creek to the Rogue River Ranch had been closed for roughly a month because of the fire. The threat to the trail area has been substantially reduced to allow hikers back on the trail, according to a spokeswoman.

However, other closures remain in effect, including the closure of Bear Creek Road.

The 24,137-acre fire is now 45 percent contained.

A hot shot firefighting team was expected to return by raft today to resume its operations in the lower river drainage. Fire crews are also constructing fire lines along the western flank of the fire in preparation for burnout operations this weekend, officials said.
