Rogue River girl earns Gates scholarship

A Rogue River High School senior does not have to worry about her college bills, or even graduate school.

Lyanna Diaz is among just 1,000 students nationwide to earn a Gates Millennium Scholarship this year, providing a full ride all the way through graduate school.

Diaz plans to major in neuroscience at the University of Puget Sound in Washington.

She says she earned her nearly perfect straight-A average with discipline developed from helping her mother clean their church on weekends, and volunteering in a soup kitchen and at a Grants Pass hospital.

Diaz is the second Rogue River High student to receive a Gates scholarship.

In 2006, Angela Viens earned the scholarship, which she said at the time she intended to use to attend Chapman University in Orange, Calif.
