RiverDogs sweep MABL All-Stars

Tyson Nelson went 3-for-3 at the plate, scored twice and stole home to fuel the Southern Oregon RiverDogs to a 7-0 win over the Men's Adult Baseball League All-Stars, completing a sweep at Harry & David Field Thursday.

The RiverDogs took the opening game, 6-1, behind the strong pitching effort of Marcus James. James allowed just four hits while striking out 11.

Southern Oregon broke open Game 2 with a three-run fourth-inning that was sparked by Jared Adamson's two-run double.

Chad Walker spanked two hits in each game for MABL.

CENTRAL POINT 7, EUGENE 2, 13 innings — At Eugene, Johnny Wood belted a grand slam and Bruce Sanford pitched all 13 innings to lead Central Point to a season-ending victory over Eugene State's Industry Challengers in a nonleague contest.

Wood capped a five-run 13th by ripping an 0-2 curveball over the fence to clear the bases. Christian Massey scored the first run of the inning on a fielders' choice.

Central Point (13-26) missed out on scoring chances in the fifth and 12th innings when potential runs were thrown out at the plate.

Sanford struck out 15 and walked three in the complete-game effort. He also had two of Central Point's 10 hits.

Steven Ruvalcaba went 3-for-6 to lead Central Point, while Bryce Peila added two hits.

AGE 11-12 STATE TOURNAMENT — At Portland, Medford National Central secured the No. 2 seed from its pool and a berth in the semifinals of the nine-team tournament with a 9-2 trouncing of Centennial.

Medford, now 2-2 in the tournament, will play Pendleton tonight at 6:30. The winner advances to the championship game on Saturday.

Medford needed to win Thursday and hope for a victory by Lake Oswego to force a three-way tie for second place in its pool. With that scenario having played out, Medford advanced to the semifinal round because it won the tiebreaker by virtue of head-to-head wins against fellow second-place teams Cascade and Centennial.

Joe Cooney went 2-for-3 with four RBIs to pace Medford. Jake McCoy was 2-for-2 with an RBI, Adrian Garcia went 2-for-3 with three runs and Tyler Gould smacked a solo home run for Medford.

Brian Lund struck out five to earn the pitching win.
