Raise a glass to World of Wine

Southern Oregon's premier wine event settles in at Jacksonville with a string of events in the coming days.

Start things off with a lesson. Train your palate to taste and recognize minute flavor profiles in wine. This skill honed by wine lovers the world over is a practiced ability that can be both taught and intensified. Dwayne Bershaw of the Southern Oregon Wine Institute at Umpqua Community College teaches this class, offered from 10 a.m. to noon at 525 Bigham Knoll, Jacksonville. Cost is $30. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.worldofwinefestival.com.

Try out your new skills with wine and a movie at 6 p.m. at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. "Bottle Shock," which recounts an upstart California winery's surprising victory at a blind taste test in Paris in 1976, will be shown, and a selection of World of Wine medal winners will be sampled. The tasting starts at 6 p.m. and the movie begins at 7:30 p.m. Movie tickets cost $5 and wine samples will be sold separately.

More activities will be offered throughout the week in Jacksonville as a part of the World of Wine festival. Check the festival website for more details.
