Power outage closes Mt. Ashland Ski Area today

The Mt. Ashland Ski Area is closed today after the same storm that brought plentiful snow also unleashed winds that likely caused a power outage on the mountain.

Wind gusts reached 60 mph at the ski area on Sunday, said Mt. Ashland Ski Area Marketing Director Rick Saul.

The ski area lost power in the early afternoon on Sunday, forcing an early closure.

Ski officials decided not to open the ski area today after Pacific Power estimated electricity would not be restored until this afternoon, Saul said.

"They have to get in a helicopter and cruise the line," said Saul, noting that the power line stretches from Emigrant Lake to Mount Ashland.

Pacific Power must identify the damage and repair the line, ski officials said.

The ski area, which is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, will reopen on Thursday, ski officials said.

As of Monday morning, the ski area had received 13 inches of snow in the past 24 hours and 59 inches of snow in the past week.
