Police seize 55 pounds of heroin in I-5 traffic stop

Oregon State Police seized 55 pounds of heroin Thursday during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 near Ashland.

It was the largest heroin haul in Southern Oregon by the agency in recent memory, according to an OSP press release issued today.

According to Sgt. Jeff Allison, a trooper stopped a 2006 Cadillac SRX sport utility vehicle on the freeway near milepost 15 for a traffic violation. The driver was identified as Raul Mendoza, 65, from Hillsboro.

A search of the car by a drug-detection dog turned up 15 sealed packages of heroin that totaled approximately 55 pounds.

The seized heroin has an estimated value of $1.1 million.

Mendoza was arrested and lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of possession and delivery of heroin.

He remains lodged on $250,000 bail.
