Police identify man who died in 140 crash Friday

A Grants Pass man who died in a weather-related crash on Highway 140 about 24 miles east of Medford on Friday has been identified as John Harlin Briscoe, 79, Oregon State Police said.

Briscoe was driving west on Highway 140 near milepost 21 at about 2:10 p.m. Friday when he lost control of his Chevrolet pickup on the icy road. The truck crossed the oncoming lane of travel, then left the roadway and plunged over an embankment. The highway was covered in snow and slush, and it was snowing hard when the crash happened, police said.

Briscoe was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Central Point office did the crash investigation. Lake Creek Fire Department, Jackson County Fire District No. 3, Mercy Flights Ambulance, and Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
