Police identify man killed in crash but can't find family

Authorities have identified a man who died Sunday morning on Interstate 5 near Grants Pass, but now they are looking for his next of kin.

Oregon State Police and the Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office used fingerprints to confirm the identity of Ronald Humphreys, 67.

Humphreys was driving south on the freeway at about 6:05 a.m. Sunday when his 1993 Dodge Caravan veered onto the gravel shoulder for an unknown reason, crash investigators said. He tried to regain control and swerved back onto the pavement. The van skidded and rolled several time before coming to rest on the west side of the freeway between two trees. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Humphreys had lived in California, Oregon and Utah, but officials haven't found any of his relatives.

They ask anyone who knows where Humphreys' family members are to contact police.

Contact Jackson County assistant medical examiner Tim Pike at 776-6236 Ext. 251 or OSP's southern dispatch center at 1-800-442-2068.
