Police arrest man in Rogue Valley Mall gas station robbery

Medford police have arrested the man they suspect robbed a Shell gas station on Crater Lake Highway near the Rogue Valley Mall late Monday.

Benyam Samuel Broeckel, 21, who has no address listed, was arrested Tuesday on charges of first- and second-degree robbery, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing with a firearm and first-degree theft. He was lodged in jail on more than $2 million bail.

An employee of the Shell station at 1968 Crater Lake Highway called 9-1-1 at about 11 p.m. Monday to report an armed robbery. A young black man had come into the station, shown a handgun and demanded cash from an employee, police said. He ran away with an undisclosed amount of money.

Officers on alert after the robbery was reported stopped a suspicious car in the 600 block of North Riverside Avenue several hours later. The stop led to a nearby home, where investigators found Broeckel and evidence from the gas station robbery, police said in a release today. They also found property that reportedly had been taken from parked cars in northwest Medford late last week and over the weekend, Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen said. No charges have been added in those cases yet.
