Phoenix voters, fire district 5 to decide merger

Voters in Phoenix and Jackson County Fire District No. 5 will decide whether to join forces in the vote-by-mail election of March 11.

Ballots are scheduled to be mailed today to city residents and patrons of District 5. Both jurisdictions must approve the annexation for it to take effect.

The fire district began providing service to the cash-strapped city in October on a contract. If voters approve the measure, firefighters now working for the city would be hired by the district and the city's fire station would be leased to the district.
