Phoenix police find fugitive hiding 27 years

Phoenix police arrested a man this morning who is suspected in a Tampa, Fla., robbery and had been on the lam for 27 years.

Tampa police called the Phoenix Wednesday and said they were looking for a fugitive believed to be in here, Phoenix Police Chief Kurt Barthel said. An update to a computer system in Tampa had uncovered an error that had prevented the dissemination of a warrant for Alphiene George Williams, 50, and let the suspect slip through the cracks, he said.

Officers had seen Williams in the area and made several attempts to find him this week. This morning at about 7 a.m. they knocked on a door of a home he was associated with across the street from Phoenix High School and he answered.

Williams tried to slam the door shut, but police prevented that.

"We are like the Fuller Brush man; we know how to get a foot in the door," Barthel said.

Williams was taken into custody without incident and is lodged in the Jackson County Jail on a fugitive warrant. No information on the decades-old armed robbery case was immediately available from officials in Florida.
