Passes to see snow by Friday afternoon

Heavy rains will move into Southern Oregon today, swelling area rivers and staying wet but not white tonight.

The National Weather Service is calling for snow levels to remain at 7,000 feet or above until late Friday morning, when a cold front will start dropping snow levels to where area mountain passes should see sticking snow by Friday afternoon.

Interstate 5’s Siskiyou Pass could see up to 2 inches of snow late Friday, while Highway 140’s summit might see up to 4 inches, according to the weather service.

Meteorologists say those traveling Friday into or out of the Rogue Valley for the New Year’s weekend should leave earlier in the day to skirt the snows.
