Panthers cruise to Bash title

WALDPORT — The South Medford 16-U ASA fastpitch softball team went 4-0 over the weekend on its way to the title in the 18-U Bash at the Beach Summer Tournament.

The Panthers defeated the tournament-host Waldport Rebels 2-1 in the championship game. South also beat McKay twice — 11-0 and 18-0 — and clipped the North Eugene Stars 7-3.

Dominique Newman pitched South Medford to both wins over McKay. She tossed a one-hitter and followed with a two-hitter, earning the decision in both.

Etna High School's Paige Finley pitched South to a pair of wins, including the title game where she allowed just five hits and struck out seven.

Kandra Towry went 9-for-11, was walked twice and drove in four runs to lead the Panthers.

Camille Smith and Shyanne Jones each went 5-for-10, with Smith scoring eight times and Jones plating five.

Also for South Medford, Megan Hobson went 4-for-8 and drove in three runs while Josie Walker was 5-for-12.

District 8 Little League

11-12 ALL-STARS — At Brookings, Nate Walker's two-run home run put Medford National Central out in front 2-0 and they never looked back in a 10-1 triumph over Brookings-Harbor in pool-play.

It was the second straight day Walker had a two-run blast. He finished the day with two hits, two runs and three RBIs. Walker also started from the mound, pitching two innings where he struck out two and gave up an unearned run.

In relief, Adrian Garcia threw four innings of shutout ball to go with six strikeouts.

Joel Goin was 3-for-4 and scored twice, and Will Cooney went 2-for-4 with an RBI-single for Central.

Medford National Central will finish up pool play against Illinois Valley at 9 a.m. on Tuesday before single elimination begins on Wednesday.
