OSP arrests man suspected of hijacking semi at knifepoint

ROSEBURG — Oregon state troopers say a man hijacked a semitrailer truck at knifepoint from a driver who had stopped for dinner in Wolf Creek along Interstate 5 in Southern Oregon.

The suspect drove off in the truck, which was hauling paper products, Oregon State Police said.

Troopers say the hijacker was arrested Thursday night after officers deployed spike strips that shredded the truck's tires.

By the end of a chase north of Roseburg, some wheels were down to bare rims, and the truck's speed was down to 10 mph as the hijacker made obscene hand gestures at his pursuers.

When the truck stopped, officers sent in a dog to get the man out of the cab.

Police say 36-year-old Travis Blondell of Wolf Creek was treated for bites and jailed on multiple charges. Police said he'd been arrested recently on a charge of assaulting an officer.

The trucker wasn't hurt.
