Opp Mine decision could come today

The county’s Board of Commissioners could weigh in this afternoon on a controversial mining proposal near Jacksonville.

Commissioners are set to deliberate on the proposed Opp Mine at a 1:30 meeting at the County Courthouse Auditorium, 10 S. Oakdale Ave. It’s open to the public.

Frank Hardin and partner Bob Robertson want to mine between 1.4 million and 1.6 million cubic yards of aggregate from 30 acres west of Jacksonville and have threatened to sue the county unless officials change zoning to allow it.

Jacksonville leaders and neighbors of the proposed mine say it would create environmental hazards, damage property values and threaten the historic status of Jacksonville.

Commissioners take up the mine after starting their day to the north: The weekly 9:30 a.m. meeting, usually held in Medford, is set at the Butte Falls Elementary School cafeteria this week.

A proposed Butte Falls enterprise zone is on the agenda.
