news brief

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has modified the 100-year and 500-year floodplains throughout all of Jackson County, affecting more than 5,000 properties.

These changes may result in the need for property owners with a mortgage to purchase mandatory flood insurance. The modified Flood Insurance Rate Maps and Flood Insurance Study will be effective in all of Jackson County on May 3.

Purchase of flood insurance in advance of the effective date for the revised maps may result in lower premiums. Lenders will begin notifying their customers after May 3 that they have 45 days to purchase flood insurance.

A countywide Flood Insurance Fair explaining the FEMA changes will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at the Medford Armory, 1701 S. Pacific Hwy., Medford. Some 87 insurance companies have been invited to participate in specialized flood insurance training in advance of the fair.
