New Medford Apartments evacuated after smoke alarm

Firefighters have evacuated downtown's New Medford Apartments while they find the source of light smoke that triggered alarms there shortly before 7:30 p.m. tonight.

The smoke was reported was discovered on the third floor of the six-floor apartment building and former Medford Hotel on the 400 block of West Main Street, says Medford Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Ken Goodson at the scene. Crews are now going door to door while five engines stand by at the scene in case something breaks out, Goodson says.

Residents were mulling around in the gold evening air while no signs of smoke or flames could be seen from the street. One engine blocked the middle lane of West Main Street during the inspection.
