Nature center plans activity day

See what's up at Medford's new Jefferson Nature Center during an open house today.

The center is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the city's new U.S. Cellular Sports Park off Highway 99 in south Medford. Admission is free.

The from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the site, the public also can watch volunteers from Klamath Bird Observatory using mist nets to count and track birds.

On tap for the open house are tours of the building and site, plus bird walks led by local Audubon Society members. The event also will feature an ethnobotany station where kids can make ropes and grind acorns and corn with stone and see plants, such as walnut and yarrow, used for dyes.

A macroinvertebrate (creatures with no backbones but big enough to see) display will be set up down by Bear Creek, with caddis flies, crawdads, water striders and more.
