Mustangs stampede to sixth straight win

GRESHAM — Lately the Medford Mustangs have been on a tear and they continued that trend on Thursday.

After the Mustangs breezed by the East County Knights 18-7 at Sandy High School, Medford scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 4-all tie and beat the Lakers at Lake Oswego 8-4.

Those victories allowed the American Legion AAA Mustangs to complete their three-day road trip by extending their win streak to six games.

With the bases loaded in the seventh, Trent Smith singled to plate Mark Austad, giving the Mustangs a 5-4 advantage over Lake Oswego. Medford added three more runs in the inning on Zack Earle's RBI single and a two-run single by Jordan Bostwick.

Earle pulled the Mustangs (16-6) out of danger in the bottom of the sixth inning in relief of starting pitcher Jared Smith.

With one out and runners on the corners, Earle forced Lake Oswego's Nick Rolli to hit a ground ball right back to Earle, who converted the double play by throwing it back to the second baseman.

Against the Knights, the Mustangs took control with seven runs in the second inning to bolster their lead to 10-0. Medford added six more runs in the fifth inning, where the game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Earle and Bostwick each had a pair of hits and drove in a pair of runs against Lake Oswego and Bruhns went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Bruhns also had a 3-for-3, three-run outing against the Knights. Dustin Smith added two hits, three runs and two RBIs, Bostwick scored four times and Logan Odom had a two-run single in the second inning against East County.
