Mustangs keep playoff hopes alive with split

The Medford Mustangs hung on for a victory in the second game to salvage an American Legion AAA Area 4 split against the Grants Pass Nuggets Tuesday.

Medford dropped the opener 5-4 before holding off the Nuggets 10-9 at Harry & David Field.

The victory in the second game keeps the Mustangs postseason hopes alive. Medford (26-15, 7-7 Area 4) must sweep Eugene Pepsi in a 6 p.m. home twin bill Friday to gain the Area 4 No. 2 seed in the state playoffs.

Despite only getting four hits and committing six errors, Grants Pass won the opener.

Zach Boskovich helped the Nuggets to the victory with two hits and two RBIs.

Grants Pass capitalized on three Mustangs errors to take a 3-0 first-inning lead. Boskovich's two-run double was the Nuggets only hit in the inning.

Medford answered back in the bottom of the inning by loading the bases with one out on singles by Jordan Bostwick and Dustin Smith and Logan Odom reaching on an error. Mark Austad followed with an RBI single. Then on a grounder by Griff Boyd, Smith was forced at the plate. Grants Pass catcher Bret Prock tried to complete a double play, but his throw to first was wild, allowing Odom to score with the second run of the inning.

Boskovich opened the third with a triple and scored on a two-out home run by Craig Dolmage to give the Nuggets a 5-2 lead.

In the sixth, Medford loaded the bases with no outs, but managed just one run on a sacrifice fly by Odom to cut the deficit to 5-4.

Bostwick and Smith both had three hits for the Mustangs, while Derek Grieve added two.

In the second game, both teams scored in each of the first three innings, with Medford holding a 5-4 edge.

The Mustangs scored five runs on five hits in the fourth to take a 10-5 lead. Odom's two-run double was the big blow during the rally.

The Nuggets scored four runs without a hit in the seventh to cut their deficit to 10-9. Odom, who relieved in the fifth, got Ben Murray to ground to shortstop Zack Earle with the bases loaded. Earle made an unassisted force out at second to end the game.

Odom had two hits and three RBIs to pace the Mustangs. Bostwick, Boyd and Grieve all added two hits.

For Grants Pass, Tyler Davis went 3-for-5, while Cory Staniforth had two hits and two RBIs.
