Musician's Friend and B.B. King offer limited-edition 'Lucilles'

Blues icon B.B. King is making sweet music with Medford-based instrument marketer Musician's Friend.

The business has joined with the legendary musician to sell an exclusive, limited-edition Gibson guitar modeled after King's legendary ax "Lucille."

The Gibson Custom Lucille guitar is featured on the cover of the Musician's Friend December catalog. It is identical to the guitar King totes on stage for countless gigs every year. This exclusive model is built to his own specifications and for the first time is available in a special limited run of five gem-inspired colors.

Only 25 of each guitar will be produced worldwide and they will be available, starting Tuesday, Nov. 30, only through the Musician's Friend online catalog at

The B.B. King Lucille Guitar features a laminated maple top, solid maple center block, and a special laminated maple neck and ebony fingerboard. The name "Lucille" is scripted in mother-of-pearl on the headstock with gold-plated hardware. Each guitar lists for $3,699. They come in sapphire blue, amethyst purple, diamond white, ruby red and emerald green.

"We're all huge fans of B.B. King at Musician's Friend, and we are very excited to feature him in our 2010 holiday catalog," said Craig Johnson, Musician's Friend chief executive officer, in a news release. Because the guitar is available only in the online catalog, it will not be sold at the Guitar Center store at 2570 Crater Lake Highway in Medford. Musician's Friend is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Guitar Center.

Guitar Center manager Pete Britt said he has not seen one of the Lucille Guitars, but he said they will probably be popular this holiday season.

"The limited-edition guitars are always really nice," Britt said, adding that early results of the holiday shopping season have been positive for Guitar Center. The store was packed with people Friday evening.

"They are buying a lot of everything," Britt said. "It helps that we have a good discount for the weekend."

The store will have a 10-percent coupon that's good for most of its stock through today, Britt said.
