MURA approves Holly Theatre grant

Medford residents will think they stepped back in time next spring when the Holly Theatre gets a much needed facelift thanks to a $100,000 grant from city officials.

The Medford Urban Renewal Agency board today unanimously approved the matching grant that will be part of $612,030 in preliminary repairs to the 1930 theater designed by local architect Frank Clark.

The facade improvement grant will help pay for doors, a new entry way, and a new marquee and neon fin on the building, located at the corner of Holly and Fifth streets. (Correction: The description of the sign has been updated.)

Owned by Jefferson Public Radio, the Holly will look after restoration much as it did when it opened its doors more than 80 years ago.

The facade improvement will be just part of an estimated $3.5 million needed to upgrade the building as a performing arts center in downtown.
