Mountain biker found dead on Ashland trail

An Ashland man was found dead on his bicycle along an Ashland trail Monday, and investigators are trying to determine what led to his death, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not released Monday evening, was found dead on the ground near the Hitt Road Trail about two miles south of Strawberry Lane, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

He was discovered shortly before 1 p.m. by a hiker. The trail is a common thoroughfare for mountain bikers, sheriff's deputies said.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office will try to determine the cause of death, sheriff's Sgt. Julie Denney said.

Investigators don't know whether the victim died from the impact of the crash or whether he had a "medical event" that led to the crash, Denney said.

Denney said she did not know whether the man was a seasoned trail rider.
