Mount Ashland plans to extend season

With plenty of powder on the ground and more expected, Mount Ashland has decided to add five days to its regular ski season.

After spring break, the mountain usually converts to a reduced schedule and is open only Friday through Sunday. This spring it plans to remain open Monday, March 28, and Thursday, March 31. Then it will stay open one additional weekend, April 15-17, officials said.

The extension will help make up for a dry spell in the heart of the ski season and take advantage of recent and predicted snow, the ski area's general manager Kim Clark said in a news release announcing the plan.

Mount Ashland got 39 inches of snow last week and now has more than 100 inches of snow on the upper mountain. A storm predicted to move into the region in the coming days should push the total at the top of the hill to about 130 inches.
